Ice Storm

On December 11, 2008, central New England was hit with an ice storm, the likes of which it hasn't seen for decades. Millions were without power for weeks, like us. We we lucky in that no damage was done to the house and we had minimal damage to our lot. We did loose the clothes line and the posts but considering everything else, we could live with that.

The storm started Thursday evening and it rained buckets. All the while the temperature stayed at 31 degrees. I thought that with that much rain it would only wash the ice away. How wrong I was! After a night of hearing the snapping of trees and tree branches we awoke to a strange scene.

Above is a picture of a Yew in the front of the house that Karen wanted to have. Next year's' blossoms are caked in ice. Click on pictures to enlarge.

(Above) The view down our street. There were worst scenes of devastation in the area. Many, many street were blocked by down trees and power lines were down everywhere. Karen tried to go to work that morning but couldn't make it.

The backyard with a limb that took down the clothes line. Below, when the sun came out, there was an eerie beauty about the scene. After awhile it got old!

St Martin

In October 2007, in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary, Karen and I spent a week in St. Martin, a Caribbean island that is half French and half Dutch. We stayed on the French side at Esmerelda Resorts and mainly crashed on the beach. Us New Englanders don't get much of a chance to soak our feet in warm ocean waters too often. Anyway the place was great and expensive and beautiful. Here are a few photos of the resort. Click to enlarge.

This is the Coco beach the section of the beach that we stayed on. There are two restaurants associated with Esmerelda Resorts, one very expensive and this one, just expensive. It was nice to have breakfast in the open air of the restaurant and then just walk out and veg on the beach.

We stayed in villas that had four rooms each and each villa had it's own pool. We tried out the pool but why swim in a pool when you have an ocean to play in?

Doesn't this look nice when you are in cold and snowy New England.

Eden Vermont

We went to a cabin in Eden Vermont, up in northern Vermont, about 25 miles from Canada. It was on a pond called Gut Pond. Not a very big pond, about a quarter mile long by about an eight of a mile wide. The cabin had all the basics, like water, propane for the stove, sink, toilet and an on-demand propane hot water heater that sorta worked.

But there was no electricity! So when it went dark at night, we had mantle lights but reading by those and candle light was not very easy so we went to bed early. Talk about being dark at night!

We canoed by ourselves once and then got Oscar to go along a couple of times. He wasn't sure of it at first but as time went on he tolerated it. The last time we canoed with him we came near another camp that had a dog on their dock. Guess what Oscar wanted to do! I paddled real fast to get us out of there while Karen hung on to Oscar.

Over all it was quiet and relaxing. We went to Stowe VT with Oscar Tuesday and he was the darling of all who met him. We ate outside in Stowe and several people just had to say hi to him.
